October brings a mix of excitement and potential challenges, with Halloween parties, the return of some sports, and the temptation of gambling. For individuals and families dealing with substance use disorder and gambling addiction or issues, it’s important to approach this month with strategies that promote peace and well-being.
In this blog post, we will explore how to navigate Halloween festivities, sports events, and gambling using CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) strategies by Dr. Bob Meyers. With some Cassandra Toppi idea’s sprinkled around. These strategies can help foster healthier relationships and find peace amidst potential triggers. A little bit of planning can go a long way!
Educate Yourself on CRAFT
Familiarize yourself with the CRAFT approach developed by Dr. Bob Meyers. CRAFT focuses on positive reinforcement, communication skills, and self-care. Understanding these strategies will empower you, even more to navigate October’s challenges effectively.
Cassandra Tip: You do not have to do this if you are not in the mindset to do so yet. Do not overwhelm yourself more. One step is better then no step. THAT IS OKAY TO NOT LOOK SOMETHING UP AT THIS TIME.
Open Communication
Maintain open and honest communication with your loved one about their triggers and concerns during Halloween parties, sports events, Sunday fun days and gambling activities that others are engaged in. Encourage them to express their feelings and fears, and actively listen without judgment (that includes rolling your eyes or crossing your arms). This creates a safe space for dialogue and understanding.
Set Clear Expectations
Establish clear expectations and boundaries regarding Halloween parties, sports events, and gambling activities. Communicate your concerns and discuss mutually agreed-upon guidelines that support their recovery and well-being, NOT AT THE EVENT in front of people. Encourage them to actively participate in decision-making before heading out to a Football Game, where ever that might be. Stay calm as possible when having this conversation. If it becomes too much ask to stop and revisit the conversation later. GUESS WHAT?! THAT IS OKAY TO DO!!
Plan Sober Halloween Activities
Explore alternative ways to celebrate Halloween without substances. For example maybe choose to organize sober gatherings such as, pumpkin carving parties, costume contests at your home, corn maze exploring, decorating the house super scary, Halloween movie night, and dressing up for trick-or-treaters. Engage in activities that promote connection, creativity, and fun without relying on substances or gambling. That also includes you not engaging in substances.
Engage in Sports and Healthy Hobbies: Maybe like playing in a Flag Football League, Soccer League or both of you joining a Pickle Ball League together. Encourage your Loved One to participate in sport leagues on Sundays. Or engage in healthy hobbies as a positive outlet for their energy and focus. Sports can provide a sense of camaraderie, physical activity, and a distraction from triggers. Support their involvement in activities that promote their well-being.
How can you support this? By attending some games. Asking questions about the game. Even just asking if your Loved One is enjoying playing in the game. Instead of thinking they must be if they are playing.
Cassandra Tip: this helps with building non-confrontal communication and not always focusing on the Addiction. Our Loved Ones are more then the Addiction.
Address Gambling Concerns
If gambling is a challenge, discuss the potential triggers and risks associated with it. Encourage your loved one to seek support through counseling, self-help groups, coaches, Recovery Groups or helplines specifically tailored to gambling addiction. Explore alternative activities that provide excitement and fulfillment without the negative consequences of gambling. For example like Rock Climbing.
Practice Self-Care
Prioritize self-care for yourself and your loved one. Engage in activities that promote relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Maybe choosing not going to every event invited to if this is triggering for your Loved one. Pick and Choose what you both want to do. Be very aware of your choices. That can really promote a different feeling of accomplishment believe it or not. Encourage your loved one to develop healthy coping mechanisms, such as mindfulness, exercise, or creative outlets, to manage stress and cravings. Your Loved One might not want to hear this. That’s okay and very normal. Who likes when things are forced on them? NO ONE.
Seek Support
Just as your Loved Ones, reach out for support from professionals, support groups, coaches or therapists who specialize in substance use disorder and or gambling addiction. These resources can provide guidance, encouragement, and a sense of community during challenging times for yourself.
Cassandra Tip: Model getting help.
October can present unique challenges for individuals and families dealing with gambling addiction and substance use disorder. By utilizing CRAFT strategies, for all temptations, and events with a focus on change, positive reinforcement, open communication, and self-care, can really have a positive effect. I would like a moment to say, there is a possibility that your Loved One might not engage in these Topics or discussions. That is okay. Take a deep breath and know that you do not need them to engage and or agree with what is being said here for these tips and strategies to work! How awesome is that?!
Remember, finding peace amidst these challenges is possible with the right strategies, support, and a commitment to well-being.
